About the Office: 

The mission of the National Security Division (NSD) is to coordinate the Department’s efforts in carrying out its core mission of combating terrorism and protecting national security.  NSD is responsible for supervising the enforcement of all federal criminal laws related to counterterrorism and counterespionage, except those specifically assigned to other divisions.  NSD also serves as the Department of Justice’s liaison to the United States Intelligence Community (USIC) and represents the government before the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.  NSD advises the Attorney General regarding all matters of national security policy.

The National Security Division’s Office of Law and Policy is seeking an experienced attorney for the position of Attorney Advisor.  The Attorney will provide advice on legal and policy matters relating to the national security issues handled by the office.  The Attorney will work closely with other components of the Department of Justice and with other departments and agencies.  The office handles a wide range of complex and highly sensitive national security law and policy issues involving counterterrorism, counterintelligence, and cybersecurity matters, among others.

Responsibilities may include coordinating legislative policy with relevant Department components, executive agencies, the National Security Council, and legislative staffs; shaping Department policy and reviewing policy documents submitted in connection with Department or interagency policy initiatives; providing legal analysis of certain programs or initiatives; and preparing testimony for congressional committees or responses to congressional questions.

Under the NSD Work-Life Program Directive, NSD employees may be eligible for telework and/or flexible work schedules subject to supervisor approval and consistent with the needs of the office and individual roles and responsibilities.

Qualifications: 

Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of a State, Territory, or the District of Columbia, and have 2.5 or more years of post J.D. professional experience to be qualified at the GS-14 level; and 4 or more years of post J.D. professional experience to be qualified at the GS-15 level. Applicants must also have superior academic credentials and writing and analytic skills.

Applicants must also be able to qualify for the highest and most sensitive security clearances.

Salary:
GS-14: $132,368 – $172,075 (per annum), GS-15: $155,700 – $183,500 (per annum)
