SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The University of Miami Libraries (UML) seeks candidates for the position of Head of the Marta and Austin Weeks Music Library that is embedded in the Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music. Located on the edge of Lake Osceola on the Coral Gables campus of the University of Miami, the library is a 22,500 square-foot facility that houses significant collections of sound recordings, musical theater archives, manuscripts, and other resources and offers more than 150 seats for individual and collaborative study. The new Head of the Music Library will serve as UML’s lead liaison librarian for the Frost School of Music by engaging actively with faculty and students; offering library instructional and consultation services; developing the Music Library’s collections; and promoting the Music Library among the broader University and public. Depending on the individual’s area of specialty and qualifications, the librarian may also have the opportunity to teach in the Frost School. The Music Library is well integrated within and supported by the University of Miami Libraries. The Music Library’s 6.0 FTE staff members are supervised by relevant department heads in the Access Services, Creative Studio, Metadata and Discovery Services, and Preservation Strategies departments, with guidance and coordination provided by the Head of the Weeks Music Library. This new reporting structure has been implemented in order to provide a more unified user experience across the UM Libraries, create more professional growth opportunities for employees, and offer the incoming Head of the Weeks Music Library the time and flexibility needed to focus on faculty and student engagement. The Head of Weeks Music Library will also work collaboratively with the  Scholarly Communications Librarian for the Performing Arts & Humanities (a newly established position currently in recruitment), whose office is located in Weeks Music Library.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performance:

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Learning and Research Services (LRS), the Head of the Music Library will:

Serve as the lead liaison librarian for the Frost School of Music

  • Foster collaborative working relationships with students, teaching faculty, and researchers in the Frost School of Music to promote and develop UML’s services.
  • Select music resources to support students and faculty in the Frost School of Music and contribute to larger UML collection development initiatives.
  • Offer consultative and instructional/teaching services on music resources, information literacy, and related topics for undergraduate students, graduate students, teaching faculty, and faculty researchers.
  • Collaborate with the Scholarly Communications Librarian for the Performing Arts & Humanities (currently in recruitment) to provide consultation services to Frost School of Music faculty on scholarly communication issues.
  • Collaborate with librarians with expertise in data services and GIS to provide coordinated support for digital scholarship.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in UML’s Distinctive Collections (Special Collections, University Archives, and the Cuban Heritage Collection) to support the development and use of rare and unique music sources.
  • Oversee the Weeks Music Library exhibition program, including curation of specific exhibits promoting awareness of music materials.
  • Maintain familiarity with learning and research trends in the Frost School of Music and adapt library services and support in response.
  • Share professional expertise, knowledge and ideas with other UML liaison librarians and functional specialists who support students and faculty.
  • Maintain familiarity with current and emerging approaches to pedagogy in higher education and music education.
  • Serve as member of the Liaison Librarian Council.

Lead the Music Library

  • Manage the library’s collections’ allocations and gift funds in coordination with the UML Budget Manager and Head of Acquisitions.
  • Advise the Music Library staff of approximately 6.0 FTE staff members and student employees, who are supervised by functional specialists in Access Services, Metadata and Discovery Services, and Preservation Strategies.
  • Coordinate cataloging and preservation of specialized music materials in collaboration with UML Metadata and Discovery Services and Preservation Strategies.
  • Increase awareness of Music Library collections and foster the use of digital collections in teaching, learning, and research in collaboration with the Head of Digital Initiatives.
  • Represent the Music Library in engagements with donors, prospective donors, etc., as needed.
  • Manage content in promotional materials and on the Music Library’s website and social media accounts in coordination with UML Creative Services.
  • Ensure that students have access to relevant academic service support and programs by working collaboratively with the Director of the Learning Commons.
  • Collaborate with the Head of the Creative Studio to ensure the ongoing development of the Weeks Music Library Creative Studio.
  • Represent the Library on the UML Department Representatives Council.
  • Lead special programs, projects, and other initiatives, as appropriate. These may include events and exhibits developed collaboratively with other library units.
  • In pursuit of the Libraries’ and University’s strategic objectives, models the University’s “DIRECCT” values (diversity, integrity, responsibility, excellence, compassion, creativity, and teamwork) and actively works to promote them.

Serve the University and library communities

  • Serve on University and Library committees, task forces, and teams. Committee membership opportunities include service on such groups as the Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion Council; Indigenous Studies Group; Metadata Remediation Working Group; Orientation Committee; Professional Development Committee, and many others.
  • Network, collaborate and actively participate in local, regional, national, or international organizations.
  • Represent and promote the University of Miami Libraries in professional organizations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • ALA accredited master’s degree or equivalent and experience in an academic or research library setting.
  • Bachelor’s degree in music, or equivalent demonstrated subject knowledge of music.
  • Demonstrated understanding of current and emerging trends in music education and librarianship.
  • Demonstrated understanding of scholarly communication issues related to music.
  • Demonstrated professional accomplishments relevant to the position, which may include scholarly publications, teaching experience, and library-related publications.
  • Knowledge of digital tools and technologies needed in music.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively and to establish and maintain strong relationships with a diverse community of faculty, students, and colleagues.

Preferred:

  • Terminal degree in music or music-related discipline.
  • Experience with supervision of library employees.
  • Fluency or near-native fluency in a second language.
