Job Summary

The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine is currently seeking a Medical Assistant to join our team of professionals.

Duties include:

  • Works on the Mobile Health Clinic and visits multiple neighborhood in northern Miami-Dade County.
  • Answers phones, receives and disposition patient calls, registers patients for visits, and schedules appointments. Contacts patients for clinical follow-up results. Conducts transcription, patient scheduling and data entry. Documents in the electronic medical record. Assists with telemedicine.
  • Measures and records vital signs. Provides patient interview, medical history and chief complaint. Records history and physical findings. Provides patient education with regards to office policies, medications, management of disease, home care, and minor office surgery/procedures.
  • Prepares patients for examinations including providing patient an explanation of any procedures to be performed. Assists provider during examinations, procedures, and routine screening tests.
  • Performs electrocardiograms (EKGs) and administers treatments/procedures such as nebulizer, ear lavage and other routine procedures. Prepares and administers vaccines and medications with provider order.
  • Coordinates with provider and patient care manager for
  • outside referrals to physicians and ancillary providers.
  • Sterilizes medical instruments. Maintains patient areas in a clean and safe manner. Practices Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) and safety standards.
  • Works in a multidisciplinary team environment that fosters effective communication and care coordination while supporting a positive experience for every patient. Provides information to patients in English and Spanish. Assists with Shared Medical Visits.
  • Performs phlebotomy and collection of laboratory specimens. Performs basic in-office lab tests. Maintains operator proficiencies in performing referenced lab testing. Maintains accurate logs and other laboratory record keeping. Reports critical lab value results to provider(s).
  • Drives to and from FIU Mobile Health Centers within their work schedule.
  • Works with and/or resides with minors and/or vulnerable persons within their role. Interacts with non-English speakers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning tasks that are logically related.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required.
Graduate of an accredited medical assistant program with at least 2 years of patient care experience or a Certified or Registered Medical Assistant.
CPR/Standard First Aid Certification

Desired Qualifications

  • Bilingual preferred (English/Spanish)
  • 1 year of medical assistant experience preferred.
